UFC Vegas 124, scheduled for Saturday, November 7 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, has lost its main event. Sean Brady, No. 5 at welterweight, has pulled out of his five-round fight against Brazil's Gabriel Bonfim, No. 6, with barely nine days' notice.

What happened to Brady

Brady explained it himself on a YouTube channel: on Tuesday night, after a bike workout, his knee swelled, and by 9 p.m. he couldn't walk. "I knew this wasn't bursitis; I knew it was an infection," he said. The diagnosis: a staph infection. With his mobility so limited, fighting in just over a week wasn't an option.

Bonfim, baffled

Bonfim, who was looking to extend a five-fight win streak in his third straight main event, confirmed on Instagram that his fight was cancelled. He said Brady told them a week before the fight and admitted he found it hard to understand. Still, he stayed upbeat: "I believe there will be news coming soon and we keep going. The goal is just one: to be champion."

The new main event

According to reporter Laerte Viana, the event will be headlined by a heavyweight fight between Dominican Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Brazil's Johnny Walker. The UFC hasn't officially confirmed it yet.

  • Cortes-Acosta, No. 8 at heavyweight and a 2022 Contender Series winner, is coming off two straight losses: to Alexander Volkov at UFC 328 and to Curtis Blaydes in September.
  • Walker, who moved up from light heavyweight, debuted at heavyweight at UFC 332 by knocking out Mick Parkin with a knee.
